Ciao, Opera Mavens. Right now, Wolf Trap Opera in Virginia is offering a Rossini rarity and Indiana University Jacobs School of Music is presenting a very fine Ariadne. Both have English subtitles.

The Touchstone (La Pietra del paragone) from Wolf Trap’s 2017 season is currently available. There’s a lot of silliness in the plot, but the music is great and well sung. The second act is especially funny and includes the mandatory Rossini storm scene. Touchstone synopsis from Wikipedia.

Ariadne auf Naxos (Richard Straus) from February 2, 2018 is now up at Indiana University. This production has some of the best singing I’ve heard from the many IU operas I’ve seen. Ariadne and Zerbinetta are standouts. Ariadne synopsis from Wikipedia.

By the way, Vienna’s superb Cenerentola from last Thursday Feb 22 is still available today. Stars Isobel Leonard and Luca Pisaroni. Highly recommended. If you download their App, you can get subtitles on your cell phone! Vienna does charge.
