Ciao, Opera Mavens! We’ve got a bunch of unique performances and a couple of special events for you to kick off the New Year:

January Birthday Bash – This month we celebrate the birthdays of Chausson, Duparc, Mozart, Pergolesi, Poulenc, Schubert, and others; young, classically trained singers embarking on their professional careers present some of these composers’ best works. Performance is FREE, come early to enjoy a drink beforehand or call the restaurant (415-252-1110) for a dinner reservation.

Das klagende Lied (Mahler) – Semi-staged presentation of cantata about a dark fairy tale kingdom where two brothers battle for a queen’s love; featuring soprano Joelle Harvey, mezzo Sasha Cooke, tenor Michael Konig, and baritone Brian Mulligan; Michael Tilson Thomas conducting.

Mary Pleasant at Land’s End (Garner) – Full piano / vocal workshop of new opera (with libretto by SFCM alumnus Mark Hernandez) set in the historical Barbary Coast of San Francisco, which promises to be the first major opera to come out of a Conservatory for over a hundred years. Cast includes many well-known SFCM alumni, members of the SFO Chorus, and current Conservatory students; conducted by SFO Chorus Director Ian Robertson. FREE, no tickets required.

Don Pasquale (Donizetti) – Crafty Norina and her lovesick beau Ernesto outwit his swaggering uncle, the Don, with help from the wily Dr. Malatesta; finally, an opera where the soprano comes out on top! Starring soprano Eileen Meredith, tenor Sergio Gonzalez, baritone Igor Viera, and bass-baritone Bojan Knezevik (Adler 1995) in the title role; directed by Erin Neff with Philip Kuttner conducting.

Our Town (Rorem) – Opera based on Pulitzer Prize-winning play by American playwright Thornton Wilder, utilizing pleasant melodies and tonal harmonies to honor a time when our lives were simpler. Featuring soprano Sarah Shafer as Emily Webb, mezzo Laura Krumm (Adler 2012-13) as Mrs. Webb, tenors Jonas Hacker as George Gibbs and Alex Mansoori (Merola 2009) as the Stage Manager, and baritone Zeffin Quinn Hollis as Mr. Webb; Ryan Murray conducting.

Snapshot: New Opera by NorCal Composers and Librettists – Excerpts from eight previously unproduced operas performed by renowned local singers and accompanied by a chamber orchestra comprised of members of SF contemporary music ensemble Earplay led by Mary Chun and Jonathan Khuner. Program 1 cast includes sopranos Chelsea Hollow, Ann Moss & Kristen Princiotta, mezzos Buffy Baggott, Kindra Scharich & Shawnette Sulker, tenor Jacob Thompson, and baritone Jason Sarten. Program 2 cast includes sopranos Amy Foote & Julia Hathaway, mezzo Molly Mahoney, tenors Darron Flagg & Joe Meyers, and baritone Daniel Cilli (OSJ 2006-10). Brief video interviews with Snapshot’s composers and librettists will air before each excerpt, and an open panel discussion will follow each program. Tickets: $35 General Admission
