An OperaBobb Sidebar: For Fans of Bryan Hymel and Luca Pisaroni
I said “Oh great, yet another dandy Carmen!” when I read that the Royal Opera Covent Garden would stream it in July. I’ve been keeping a log of all the opera productions I’ve ever seen since I was 13 years old (I’m up to 2447 as of today). I’d seen Carmen 38 times. I wasn’t in the mood for another one.
I had heard, however, that the production by Barrie Koski was unique and definitely not what we usually see in a Carmen production. So I gave it a try. It turned out to be one of the most exciting and enjoyable Carmen’s I’ve ever seen. Singing is excellent. The children’s chorus is one of the high points, especially in the last act.
It’s available on YouTube. Here’s the link: Carmen at the Royal Opera.
