An Introduction to Puccini – Join Speight Jenkins for this five-week course on the most widely-performed opera composer today. Though Puccini didn’t invent verismo, a Romantic look at the lives of ordinary people, he did define it, and nine of his eleven operas, including La Boheme, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly, are regularly performed all over the world. You will explore why and hear great singers who have mastered Puccini’s style and understand why his lyricism and sentimentality still delight audiences everywhere. $310.

A Centennial Celebration of Birgit Nilsson and Astrid Varnay – This month, these “Golden Age” sopranos will be celebrated with a pair of documentary films. Bayreuth Primadonnas is a German television interview with Birgit Nilsson, Astrid Varnay and Martha Mödl. English intertitles were added by New York opera maven Donald Collup. The second documentary is Never Before – The Life and First New York Career of Astrid Varnay, also created by Donald Collup. Free for members, $10 fee for nonmembers.

Opera Scouts – Applications now being accepted for this program for students aged 12 – 18. Celebrating individual achievement within a supportive ensemble, Opera Scouts provides an artistic, social, career and developmental home for youth who are passionate about the performing arts. Scouts meet weekly for training, activities, projects, rehearsals and trips to local performances.
