This month, Bill and Matthew preview SF Opera’s fall season highlighting operas and singers coming to town including new releases and tributes to singers of the past. Sun Sept 2 at 8pm

Madama Butterfly (Puccini) – This 2009 Metropolitan Opera performance of Anthony Minghella‘s production stars Patricia Racette (Adler 1990) as Cio-Cio-San, Marcello Giordani as U.S. Navy Lt. B. F. Pinkerton, Maria Zifchak (Merola 1998) as Suzuki, and Dwayne Croft as Sharpless and is conducted by Patrick Summers (Merola 1986-87).
Sat Sept 8 Potluck at 12noon followed by DVD presentation at 1pm

JARVIS CONSERVATORY – OPERA FILMS
Un Ballo in Maschera (Verdi) – Envy, conspiracy, love, jealousy, revenge and ultimately, forgiveness come together in Verdi’s intensely passionate masterpiece. This Gran Teatre del Liceu production is by Vincent Boussard and stars Piotr Beczala as Riccardo, Carlos Álvarez as Renato, Keri Alkema as Amelia, Katerina Tretyakova as Oscar, and Dolora Zajick (Adler 1985) as Ulrica. Conducted by Renato Palumbo. Sat Sept 8 at 7pm Jarvis Conservatory 1711 Main St., Napa
Romeo et Juliet (Gounod) – Gran Teatre del Liceu production starring Saimir Pirgu and Aida Garifullina as the famous pair of lovers. Director Stephen Lawless sets the production in the context of the American Civil War (1861-1865). Conducted by Josep Pons.

PBS – GREAT PERFORMANCES AT THE MET
Luisa Miller (Verdi) – Plácido Domingo stars in this heart-wrenching tragedy of fatherly love. Sonya Yoncheva sings the title role opposite Piotr Beczala as Rodolfo in the first Met performances of the opera in more than ten years. Bertrand de Billy conducts. Sun Sept 9 at 12noon – KQED Plus
Cendrillon (Massenet) – Laurent Pelly‘s imaginative storybook production of this Cinderella story is the first in Met history. Joyce DiDonato (Merola 1997) stars in the title role with mezzo-soprano Alice Coote in the trouser role of Prince Charming, Kathleen Kim as the Fairy Godmother, and Stephanie Blythe as the imperious Madame de la Haltière. Bertrand de Billy conducts.

Cuentos de Peregrinación – Online broadcast of Héctor Armienta‘s song cycle opera based on the heart wrenching and inspirational stories of Mexican immigrants who have made the arduous journey from Mexico to the US. This work is intended for the community and those that want to celebrate the contributions of all immigrants – including those within our own family.
