Cyrano de Bergerac (Alfano) – This classic love story comes alive in this rediscovered operatic gem that packs the power of full-blooded Italian verismo. The title role is a signature part for the charismatic star tenor Roberto Alagna, performing it with the Met for the first time opposite Jennifer Rowley as his secret love, Roxanne. With Atalla Ayan as Christian and Juan Jesús Rodríguez as de Guiche. Marco Armiliato conducts. Sat May 6 at 10am
Der Rosenkavalier (R. Strauss) – Renée Fleming as the Marschallin and Elina Garanca as Octavian star in Strauss’s grandest opera. With Günther Groissböck as Baron Ochs, Erin Morley as Sophie, Markus Brück as Faninal, and Matthew Polenzani as the Italian Singer. Sebastian Weigle conducts.

Don Pasquale (Donizetti) – Sparkling with virtuosic singing and playful humor, this boisterous comedy pits the miserly Don Pasquale against his nephew Ernesto and Ernesto’s sweetheart, the crafty young Norina. Starring Maurizio Muraro (Don Pasquale), Heidi Stober (Norina), Lawrence Brownlee (Ernesto), Lucas Meachem (Adler 2005, Dr. Malatesta), Bojan Knezevic (Adler 1995, A Notary); conducted by Giuseppe Finzi.

PBS – GREAT PERFORMANCES AT THE MET
Don Giovanni (Mozart) – Simon Keenlyside makes his Met role debut as the unrepentant seducer in Michael Grandage’s production that also includes Hibla Gerzmava as Donna Anna, Malin Byström as Donna Elvira, Adam Plachetka as Leporello, Serena Malfi as Zerlina, Matthew Rose as Masetto, Paul Appleby as Don Ottavio, and Kwangchul Youn as the Commendatore. Fabio Luisi conducts.

Rusalka (Dvorak) – In this rebroadcast of the 2014 Otto Schenk production, Renee Fleming sings the title role of a water nymph who longs to be human opposite Piotr Beczala as the Prince, the object of her affection. John Relyea (Adler 1997) is the Water Gnome, Dolora Zajick (Adler 1985) sings the witch Jezibaba, and Emily Magee is the Foreign Princess; Conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin.

L’Amour de Loin (Saariaho) – Robert Lepage‘s dazzling new production features glimmering ribbons of LED lights that extend across the length of the stage and over the orchestra pit. Finnish conductor Susanna Mälkki makes her Met debut leading the cast of Eric Owens as Jaufré, the knight on a quest of love, Susanna Phillips as Clémence, his lover on the other side of the sea, and Tamara Mumford as the Pilgrim who carries the messages between them. Roméo et Juliette (Gounod) – Soprano Diana Damrau and tenor Vittorio Grigolo are back as opera’s classic lovers in Gounod’s lush Shakespeare adaptation. Bartlett Sher‘s production has already won acclaim for its vivid 18th-century milieu and stunning costumes during runs at Salzburg and La Scala. Gianandrea Noseda conducts the sumptuous score. Moby-Dick (Heggie) – Jay Hunter Morris plays the role of Captain Ahab in SF Opera’s thrilling 2012 operatic adaption of Herman Meville’s epic tale of the obsessive whaling boat captain who descends into madness and puts his crew in mortal danger. With Stephen Costello (Greenhorn), Morgan Smith (Starbuck), Jonathan Lemalu (Queequeg), Talise Trevigne (Pip), and Robert Orth (Stubb). Directed by Leonard Foglia and conducted by Patrick Summers (Merola 1986-87).

Macbeth (Verdi) – The general of the victorious Scottish armies hears a prophecy from three witches that predict he will be the next King of Scotland. Believing this premonition, his wife encourages him to kill the King. His divine right drives Macbeth to be bloodthirsty with friends and opponents alike but alone and racked with guilt, he faces his last battle and death. Christof Loy‘s 2016 production for Barcelona’s Gran Teatro del Liceu features Ludovic Tezier as Macbeth, Vitalij Kowaljow as Banquo, Martina Serafin as Lady Macbeth, and Saimir Pirgu as Macduff. Conducted by Giampaolo Bisanti.

Les Contes d’Hoffmann (Offenbach) – Robert Carsen’s 2016 production for Paris’ Opera Bastille stars Ramon Vargas in the title role of the poet Hoffmann, with Roberto Tagliavini as the Four Villains, Stephanie d’Oustrac as the muse Nicklausse, Sabine Devieilhe as Olympia, Kate Aldrich as Giulietta, and Ermonela Jaho as Antonia.
